The Veil Series was made in 2012 in Baltimore, MD. In this series there are 3 large sculptures made of plexi glass, scavenged factory wood, and aluminum L bars. Also in this series are photographs that were originally printed on 2 feet x 3feet paper, and installed on the wall behind the 5 foot x 2 foot plexi sculptures. The room they were installed in is dark, the only light is a small LED behind the base of the sculptures, when a light is cast on the sculptures the scratches on the plexiglass is become crisp illuminated renderings. Without a spotlight on the plexi glass pieces the scratches are invisible.
My work is about finding magic in pure unadulterated beauty. I seek to make ethereal romantic and supernatural occurrences. From the way the glass floats in suspense by a taught choke-hold of reclaimed material to the transcendent quality of lace as it visually balances between seen and unseen. Holy, pure, precious and sacred I see this veil as forgiveness, a second chance, and a grapple between hiding and concealing. -Julia Koerner Johnson, 2012.
